Tales from Himmelreich
Mariazell is a place of energy, a destination of longing, a site of pilgrimage, and an oasis of indulgence.
There are many ancient legends entwined with the origins of Mariazell. It is said that in the year 1157, the monk Magnus was sent to the region as a spiritual guide, carrying with him a statue of the Virgin Mary carved from linden wood. When a large rock blocked his path, he prayed to Mother Mary for assistance. Miraculously, the rock split apart, clearing the way. Grateful, the monk settled on a nearby hill and built a wooden cell that served as both a chapel for the statue and a dwelling for himself. From "Mary in the Cell" eventually emerged the name Mariazell.

Stories from Himmelreich
Our house breathes centuries of history.
It is shaped by countless personal stories—shared warmly by our guests in convivial gatherings. These memories are reflected in the long ancestral gallery of former hotel owners, in the long-forgotten names once carried by the house, such as "Goldener Greif," "Hofmeier," "Ziegler," or "Tinter," and in the ancient "right to staff and serve beverages," which is still commemorated on the keystone above our entrance. Since December 2022, our hotel has been managed by seasoned hospitality professionals Andrea Győrffy and Vince Kovács—thus beginning a new chapter in the nearly 300-year-old history of this house.
